MARDI GRAS! [Contest]
Today is offically MARDI GRAS!
I love this holiday…well technically its not a holiday but still I love it.
Now I don’t go around flashing my boobies for all the world to see…because honestly no one wants to see that lol. But I do try to go out with friends to local parties to see what all the fuss is about and look at all the pretty masks.
I mean the colors everywhere are just simply beautiful don’t you think?
Mardi Gras in the United States
Many historians believe that the first American Mardi Gras took place on March 3, 1699, when the French explorers Iberville and Bienville landed in what is nowLouisiana, just south of the holiday’s future epicenter:New Orleans. They held a small celebration and dubbed the spot Point du Mardi Gras. In the decades that followed, New Orleans and other French settlements began marking the holiday with street parties, masked balls and lavish dinners. When the Spanish took control of New Orleans, however, they abolished these rowdy rituals, and the bans remained in force until Louisiana became a U.S. state in 1812.
On Mardi Gras in 1827, a group of students donned colorful costumes and danced through the streets of New Orleans, emulating the revelry they’d observed while visiting Paris. Ten years later, the first recorded New Orleans Mardi Gras parade took place, a tradition that continues to this day. In 1857, a secret society of New Orleans businessmen called the Mistick Krewe of Comus organized a torch-lit Mardi Gras procession with marching bands and rolling floats, setting the tone for future public celebrations in the city. Since then, krewes have remained a fixture of the Carnival scene throughout Louisiana. Other lasting customs include throwing beads and other trinkets, wearing masks, decorating floats and eating King Cake.
Louisiana is the only state in which Mardi Gras is a legal holiday. However, elaborate carnival festivities draw crowds in other parts of the United States during the Mardi Gras season as well, including Alabama and Mississippi. Each region has its own events and traditions.

I have never been to New Orleans, but hope to some day. However, it has been said that St. Louis, MO hosts the 2nd largest Mardi Gras celebration in the country. I am lucky enough to live here!! The parades are amazing to watch, even in the snow.

I would love to go to Mardi Gras, it sounds like a lot of fun. Thanks for the great giveaway! cheryllynne(at)rocketmail(dot)com
I used to live in NOLA and loved it. Have not been able to find the box containing my collection of beads and masks since moving so this would be a lovely start of a new collection.
Never have been to Mardi Gras but it’s definitly on my bucket list. Up here in PA we usually have Fat Tuesday as Fastnacht Day. The history is that people would give up fried food for lent & needed to use up any fat that was left because it would spoil by the end of Lent so the PA Germans used potato flour to make fastnachts(donut type pastry) and used the last of the fat to deep fry them.
Thanks for the Mardi Gras history and the cool contest.

I too love the colors! Another great excuse for kiddie crafts.
I have never been to Mardi Gras but love the thought of it. I just have to work on my anxiety of crowds before I could do this. I have always loved the beads and the masks. I would love to win these to display on my bookshelves.
That. Was a lot of boobs. And a lot of whatever that last guy had going on!
I would love to experience that atmosphere in Louisiana at least once. But even if I did manage to go, there would be no flashing for me. Like you said no one wants to see that!
Thanks!

I think the mask is gorgeous. What a great prize. I have never been to Mardi Gras either. I think it would be exciting to be caught up in all the excitement, but also a great chance to experience a culture so diverse. Again, thanks for a chance to win the mask and beads. synlab1 (at) yahoo (dot) com.
